Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Request appointmentWhat is an MRI?
3T MRI services are offered at our Fairfield practice.
MRI employs a powerful magnetic field and low-energy radiofrequency waves to investigate a particular region of your body. The frequency of the radiofrequency waves utilised in MRI is akin to those employed by FM radio stations.
The primary benefit of MRI, in contrast to other imaging methods, lies in its ability to offer exceptional resolution of soft tissues. Consequently, structures like the brain, nerves, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal cord, and the abdomen are exceptionally well-suited for MRI examinations.
MRI is a painless procedure and does not involve the use of ionising radiation.
What happens during an MRI appointment?
The area being examined must be positioned at the center of a cylindrical magnet. Our experienced MRI technologists specialise in managing anxious patients, and at Direct Radiology, we utilise wide bore technology in our MRI systems to optimise the patient experience. Our MRI machines feature open cylinders with lighting and pleasant airflow.
Before commencing the examination, our MRI technologist will ensure your comfort since it is essential to remain still throughout the entire scan. If you feel any discomfort, please communicate this to our staff, allowing them to adjust your position or use additional soft padding to enhance the pleasantness and relaxation of the examination.
During the MRI, there will be loud, rhythmic noises. You will have the opportunity to select your preferred music genre or radio station, and headphones will be provided to make the scan as enjoyable as possible. For those sensitive to sound, earplugs are also available. Additionally, every patient will receive a handheld buzzer, allowing communication with the MRI technologist and providing a way to halt the examination if needed.
In some cases, an intravenous contrast injection called gadolinium may be necessary to enhance the accuracy of the examination. Gadolinium is a paramagnetic material that highlights various structures and pathologies. Patients may experience a cool sensation at the injection site and may notice a metallic taste.
How can I prepare for my MRI appointment?
When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked about the purpose of the examination and will also be asked a set of safety questions concerning metallic implants that might impact your scan. Typically, most MRI scans do not need any preparation however, for abdominal examinations, you may be required to fast for 8 hours before the scan. Our team will confirm any particular requirements with you prior to your appointment.
