Dental Imaging (OPG)
Request appointmentWhat is a Dental X-ray (OPG)?
Dental imaging or Orthopantomogram (OPG), is a type of radiographic examination that provides a panoramic or wide-angle view of the upper and lower jaws. It is a two-dimensional X-ray that captures the entire mouth in a single image, including the teeth, jaws, temporomandibular joints (TMJ), and surrounding structures.
OPG images are commonly used in dentistry for various purposes, including diagnosis and treatment planning to assess the overall oral health of a patient to diagnose various dental issues such as cavities, periodontal disease, impacted teeth and jaw disorders, orthodontic treatment, surgical planning, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) assessment, and monitoring dental development especially in children and adolescents.
OPGs offer a broader perspective of the entire oral and maxillofacial region in a single image compared to the traditional intraoral x-rays, reducing the need for multiple exposures. It is a useful tool in routine dental care and various dental specialties due to its efficiency and ability to capture a comprehensive view of the oral anatomy.
What can I expect from a Dental X-Ray (OPG) and how do I prepare for it?
There is no preparation required prior to your Dental X-Ray (OPG).
During your appointment, you'll need to take off your glasses, hair accessories and jewellery. Afterward, you'll be guided to stand while placing your chin on a small platform for precise alignment. Using a sterile covered mouthpiece, you'll be instructed to bite down to stabilise your head.
Once the alignment is precise, the X-ray machine will orbit around your head, creating a panoramic image. The process is very quick and you won't experience any discomfort.
